Powers of Attorney

San Diego Estate Planning Attorney

A power of attorney allows you to appoint someone to make financial or health care decisions for you, should you be unable to do so. These tools are very useful and provide a cost-effective alternative to a guardianship or conservatorship.

At the Law Offices of Steven M. Ratner, we have helped many people create powers of attorney of all types. We understand the benefits of these documents, their limitations and how to use them to help our clients achieve their goals.

What a Power of Attorney Can Do

There are many types of powers of attorney. They can be quite specific and limited to certain matters or general and very broad in scope.

Power of attorney for financial decisions — with this document, you appoint another person to make financial decisions for you. A general power of attorney gives someone authority to take control of all your financial accounts. You can also create a limited power of attorney which is restricted in time or to a specific event, such as giving someone the ability to sell a piece of real estate, should you be out of town that day.

Advance directive for health care decisions — also called a medical durable power of attorney, this appoints a person who can make medical decisions for you should you be incapacitated.

How We Can Help

Our firm has extensive experience with these documents. We can review your situation, discuss your goals and recommend the right course of action for you.

We create each power of attorney based on our client's needs, and include specific language designed to protect our client's rights and options. We do not use standard power of attorney forms, because use of these can tie your hands. For example, a standard power of attorney cannot handle gifting, Medi-Cal planning or other estate planning matters.

The Law Offices of Steven M. Ratner will create the document or documents designed to protect your options and achieve your goals.
